The car that started it all

January 11, 2012 - After working their way through rush hour traffic that was stopping for the accident and the downpour that had started minutes before, Engine611(Capt. Jacobs) arrived to find a 4 car crash with one car on fire and the other 3 jumbled together away from the burning vehicle. There was one person lying on the jersey barrier and a group of 4 or 5 people standing in front of the 3 cars. The FF from Engine611 stretched the front bumper line to hit the fire while the OIC checked the other vehicles.

These cars were about 50 feet in front of the burning car

It was determined that all occupants had self extricated prior to the arrival of Engine61, the person on the jersey barrier was the driver of the burning vehicle, and all other people involved were lone occupants of their respective vehicles. While the fire was being knocked the other cars were checked for hazards and secured. Engine618 arrived and started pt care for the guy on the jersey barrier, who had aggravated a recent back injury during the accident. He was transported by A625 after being stabilized. The other drivers all refused care/transport. LCSO arrived and assisted with traffic control and eventually took over control of the scene after FD personnel left. All units cleared the scene in about forty-five minutes.
January 11 2012 - This morning Engine611(Capt. Schumacher) was dispatched for an outside gas leak, near the intersection of Pacific Blvd and Towlern Pl. A call had come from the car dealership near this intersection that there was an odor of gas outside their building and they thought the construction crew working there had hit an underground line. This is the same intersection that members had been to about a month prior for the same type of call. This time the outcome was different.

January 11, 2012 - Engine611 arrived on the scene to find a construction crew that was drilling under this intersection to put in underground cables. They had dug a large hole, approximately 6X6X4 deep, on the opposite side of the intersection from the drilling machine and it was from this hole that gas could be smelled. Upon inspection and speaking with the construction workers it was thought that they had accidentally hit a line that could have been as large as 4 inch diameter. Extra resources were requested, including Washington Gas, as well as an operations channel. Pacific Blvd Command was established and traffic stopped in both directions of Pacific Blvd, with assistance of LCSO. The extra units included TL611, Engine623(Lt. Hankin) and a Battalion Chief, BC603(Johnson) responded. TL611 arrived and assisted with checking inside the two car dealerships near the intersection as well as with setting out supply line for water supply, if one was needed. Engine623 arrived and positioned at the hydrant which was down one block from the incident and on the opposite side of the street, the officer and FF assisted with checking the businesses. BC603 arrived and did a face to face with Captain Schumacher and assumed command of the incident. Command special called for the Haz-Mat team from station 619 so they could set up an area monitoring system.

When Haz-Mat 619(Rovelli) arrived they positioned in the parking lot adjacent to the scene and set up their Area-Rae system, which has four monitoring stands that can be setup around an incident and the air quality can be monitored remotely using a laptop. Once this system was in place command released the tower and second engine. Engine 611 was repositioned to the hydrant and stood by just in case a water supply was needed while Washington Gas personnel dug the hole to clamp the broken line. After about two hours Washington Gas had the leak secured and released fire department personnel. The road was reopened and equipment was picked up and units returned in service.

December 13, 2011 - For the second time in two days companies were dispatched to 1000 Harry Byrd Hwy LS building, Box 1836, for an inside gas leak. This was the same building, both days. The assignment brought companies 618, 611(Engine, Tower) 615, BC601 and SO600...

Engine618 arrived and found a single story building, being evacuated. Campus police were also on scene, as well as campus facilities people. Campus personnel advised that there was construction being done on the building and that the workers had turned on a valve they thought was not connected yet. The valve was closed quickly, but gas still escaped into the building. Tower 611 worked to ventilate the building and double check there was no other source. Units quickly finished ventilation and went back in service.
December 16, 2011 - This call happened on Dec. 6th. At 1231 hrs Units from 11 were dispatched for a haz-mat incident at 22265 Pacific Blvd. The assignment also brought companies 18, 23, 6, 19(for the haz-mat team), BC601, BC603, SO600 and EMS600., ...

While enroute ECC advised that a white powdery substance had been found in a letter in the mailroom. It was also said that the room had been evacuated and sealed. ECC advised the caller to have building evacuated. E611(Schumacher) and Tower 611(Lambert) arrived along with E698(running out of station 23, Hankin) to find a 6 story office building being evacuated. The officer from E611 was met by representatives from Raytheon who stated that they the room sealed and the employees who had found the substance had not been exposed. E611 set up Raytheon Command and had incoming units slow their response and stage on Pacific Blvd. BC601 arrived shortly thereafter and did a face to face with E611, then assumed command of the incident. Command placed everyone in service except companies 11 and 19. Units from company 19 began arriving and positioned at the front of the building. The Haz-Mat unit(Rovelli) along with the support unit and Tower619(Lantz) began setting up for entry. While members were being prepped for entry the support unit was utilizing company 11 members for setting up the decon area. BC603(Johnson) arrived, spoke with Command and was given charge of the Haz-Mat group.
November 7, 2011 - This morning the Engine(Capt. Schumacher) was dispatched, along with Medic 615, for and auto accident at the intersection of Old Ox Rd and Shaw Rd., ...

Upon arrival at the intersection the accident was found to be about a quarter mile east of the intersection and in the west bound lanes of Old Ox Rd, so units had to drive past and turn around to get to it. As they drove by they saw a two vehicle crash, a BMW had rear ended a truck that was carrying a forklift on the rear. All occupants were out of the vehicles prior to the arrival of fire and rescue units. It appeared that the BMW drove into the back of the truck and the wheel for the forklift rolled up the hood and into the windshield and came to rest at the roof line. The driver of the BMW self extricated prior to the arrival of fire rescue units and was sitting in his mother's car. The medic crew evaluated him, while the engine crew checked both vehicles for hazards. There was no obvious damage to the truck and the driver had no complaints of injury. The car sustained a lot of damage and fluids were leaking onto the street. Absorbent was put down and pieces of the car were removed from traffic lanes. After evaluation of the 16 year old driver and speaking with the mother, she signed a refusal form which sent the medic unit home. The engine stayed on scene a few minutes more to assist LCSO with traffic control then also went in service. An interesting thing to note is that the battery for the car was found under the back seat on the passenger side.
Johnson) advised they had found a fire in the attic area of the main clubhouse...

The incident was upgraded to a structure fire bringing units from Sterling, Fairfax and Ashburn. A Leader line was stretched and as units started to arrive the fire was extinguished. BC614(Lamb) arrived quickly and set up the Trump Golf course command. Tower(Lt. Lambert) and Wagon(Capt. Schumacher) 611 arrived right behind 439 and the tower set up on side "Alpha" near the "Bravo" corner. The tower Lt. and B-1 firefighter went inside to assist with interior ops, while the driver and B-2 firefighter threw ladders, set up the aerial and, eventually, got the alarm silenced. BC601(Williams) had interior command on the interior. The small fire had occured on top of a heating unit, on whick someone had apparantly set a box of bingo cards, these came in contact with the exhaust flue and eventually started burning. There was some drop down of burning material that burned a small hole in the floor. No extension was found below or between the floors. Quick work by everyone helped keep this from becoming a larger fire.

November 24, 2011 - The annual family Thanksgiving Day lunch was held today at station 611. It was normal operations at the start of shift today, until about 1100 hr. That is when the guys started getting ready for the traditional holiday lunch.
SVFC member Wayne Blake was frying two turkey's, they would be picked up by off duty personnel(Lt. Kerkstra). It has been tradition for the majority of the side dishes to be pot luck style and the main dish to provided by the crew of station 611. Everyone is invited, past and present members, company 618, the on duty volunteer rescue crew from 615 and 625, the Battalion Chief and, of course, families are encouraged to come. People started showing up around 1230/1300 with their contributions to the meal. Introductions of family members were made and everyone started socializing and having fun. At about 1400 people started to lineup to fill their plates at the buffet. Lots of people went back for seconds(even thirds). The food is always excellant and this year was no exception. The engine bay was cleaned that morning and tables were set up end to end to accomodate all who were attending. This year we had almost 30 people and a good time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who helped make this another successful meal.

November 23, 2011 - Well, it was a good run. But, the "Playmaker" has been transferred out of station 611. Lt. Chris Kerkstra served the Sterling Park community for 6 years. He was mainly the Tower Lieutenant, but could switch to commanding the engine with ease. He is a hard worker, a respected officer and above all a good fireman. Chris is very motivated to do his best and this motivates his people to do their best. He is always willing and ready to pass on the knowledge and skills he has picked up over the years.

On his last day in the station the guys gave him a plaque with his helmet front and the station patch to thank him for his years of service and dedication. We wish him the very best in his future assignment. He will be missed by everyone here.

W611(Capt. Schumacher) was already on the road heading across town to exchange equipment at station 618, so they ended up taking the 1st due assignment. Initial reports from ECC was a dumpster fire with extension into the building to the rear of the Giant foodstore.

Wagon 611 arrived on scene to find a pile of what appeared to be trash on fire outside of a rollup door to the rear of a large strip mall that was two levels in the rear. The fire was located outside of what ended up to be a furniture store. Command was established and an 1 3/4" was stretched to put out the fire. Tower (Lt. Kerkstra) split the crew and the interior crew forced entry to several doors to check for extension, while the exterior crew went to the roof to check conditions. The fire was quickly extinguished by W611 firefighter. No extension was found on the interior or on roof, though there was a heavy smoke condition through out the basement storage area and two floors of the furniture store and light smoke in the Giant food store storage area. TL606(Lt. Nicholson) arrived and positioned on side "Alpha" and checked exposures. Command(BC601) held the two tower ladders and first two engines for ventilation and place the remainder of the assignment in service. Multiple fans were set up to remove the smoke due to the large floor area and three different levels that needed to be cleared.

Kerkstra) was on it's way to our sister station on the north end for fuel when the MDT alert sounded signalling a box alarm. The tones were simultaneously struck for a townhouse fire on Lawnes Creek Terrace in Cascades. Engine 618 (Capt. Leeper) arrived on scene
with a three level middle row townhouse smoke showing side alpha. A resident was standing outside and as the line was stretched and Command established, Capt. Leeper attempted to get any information out of the woman. She did not appear to understand and as Tower 611 and Engine 618 were making entry, she attempted to push by and re-enter the burning structure. She was quickly turned back by members and a Deputy on-scene escorted her to an ambulance. It was later discovered she had suffered burns to her hand and had been trying to re-enter to retrieve some valuables in the burning room.
Bliss) arrived on scene and stretched a second line. Visibility was zero as we finally found a locked bedroom door with high heat pushing out. Members forced the door and were able to get a knock on the fire, which had already been vented on the exterior. The fire was knocked as other units arrived and some extensive overhaul was performed. the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The following incidents were ran by crews from Station 11:

13:37 - Public Service: tree down - 603 West Church Rd. - Tower 11

16:13 - Fire Alarm - 47321 Middle Bluff Place - Engine 11

16:40 - Vehicle Fire - Georgetown Pike & Springvale Rd (Fairfax County) - Engine 11

While the Engine was clearing the Fairfax run, Engine 18 was responding to Fairfax for a Water Rescue when they came upon their own Water Rescue in Loudoun County on Route 7 at the Fairfax/Loudon County line.
Engine 18 established the Harry Byrd Highway Command and asked for the full Water Rescue response. This brought units from 11, 15, 25, 22, 13, BFC 601, EMS 601 and Safety 601. Engine 11 (Capt. Harne), who was less than a mile away added onto the call, and responded West bound in the East bound lane to get to the incident. When it was determinded that the vehicle was closer to the Eastern side, units were directed by Command to that side. Tower 11 (Lt. Bliss), and Boat 25 were assigned to the East side, and Captain Harne was assigned the Eastern Division. After a game plan was established, the crews utilized Tower 11 to back down into the low level water, set up, and rescue the victim. The Boat crew stood by why this was accomplished, and downstrean safeties stood by on both River left and River right. Once the Tower, crew and victim were back on dry land, the incident was downgraded and units picked up. The vicitim was ok and cleared by medical personnel before being taken home.
In between, both crews were out collecting for MDA. Then came a pub-ed (60 children) before lunch. After the earthquake shook Loudoun County, the 911 lines lit up for all types of incidents.

A structure fire went out at 14:57 for fire reported in the rear of a townhouse in our first due. The Wagon (Capt. Harne) and Tower (Lt. Kerkstra) arrived with nothing evident. The residents met the Wagon on the Delta side of the homes and advised them of a fire in the rear of their home. The Wagon ran a line up side C and found a small fire on the deck and fence. The fire was quickly extinguished and overhaul was completed. Command (Capt. Harne) held Wagon 11, Engine 18 and Tower 11 only. As units were leaving that incident, the inside gas leak assignment was dispatched for Community Plaza in 18's first due. With 18 and 439 (Fairfax) not available, Wagon 11 and Engine 22 were due along with Tower 11, BC 601 and Safety 600. Wagon 11 arrived and found a strong odor of gas in the Hogan and Son's Goodyear garage. The gas was secured and as other units arrived, attempted to find the source of the leak. Crews from 11 and 22 went into each buisness at 46970 Community Plaza to meter the area's. The gas was shut off to the entire building, and units then picked up. BC 601 (Nally) had the Community Plaza Command.

Sterling Units assist with 9/11 Ride

August 19, 2011 - On Friday afternoon, the Wagon (Capt. of the call, Tower 611 (Lt. Kerkstra) added on. As units responded, Engine 404 marked on scene with a two story colonial single-family dwelling with fire showing from side charlie at the roof line. Tower 611 and Truck 425 arrived simultaneously. The two truck crews met at the front door and came up with a quick action plan. Truck 425 (Lt. Ray Foster) would go to the second floor for primary search and to open up the ceiling while Tower 611 performed the primary on the first floor and basement. Engine 404 already had a charged line to a bedroom on the charlie/delta side of the second floor and was trying to get a knock on the fire in the attic. Truck 425 only had one crew member outside so the Tower 611 X-ray crew assisted with ground ladders and horizontal ventilation. Wagon 611 was assigned RIT.

As other units arrived more lines were stretched including one to the outside rear to knock down fire on the exterior. Lightning had apparently struck the house causing a fire in the attic and throughout the zero-clearance chimney area. Both truck crews worked hard to open up the ceiling and extinguish fire in the attic. Battalion 401 (B/C Colbert) did an excellent job as incident commander, and all crews worked hard in the rain and subsequent humidity to put a quick knock on the fire.

August 17th, 2011 - On Wednesday afternoon at 1422 hours, units were dispatched for the possible truck on fire at 21826 Pacific Blvd at the Sterling BMW. A column of smoke could be seen from Station 11 as the Wagon (Capt. Harne) responded.
They arrived soon after along with the Medic from 15 with several vehicles on fire. They grabbed their own plug and the Pacific Blvd. Command was established.

The Wagon crew placed the 200' crosslay into service and started to knock down the fire. Engine 23 arrived next and pulled a second line from Wagon 11 and placed it in service. A burn patient was located and once evaluated, it was determined that he was in need of helicopter transport to a burn unit.
